Atwater Village town hall inviting views on potential pocket park
The Atwater Village Neighborhood Council is hosting a town hall on Thursday, January 23 (more info below) to discuss ideas on streetscaping Glendale Boulevard. The Council is considering creating a pocket park somewhere along the main drag, replacing some parking spaces for a plaza-like environment for pedestrians. If you're familiar with Silver Lake's Sunset Triangle Plaza (aka "Polka Dot Plaza") on Sunset Boulevard at Edgecliff, this is essentially the same idea - creating a pedestrian-friendly "green" space.
The location has not yet been determined, but the Council has been discussing the possibility of the intersection of Glendale and Brunswick Avenue by Kopper Keg.
The focus of the town hall will include hearing neighborhood thoughts on the project: Should it happen? What should it look like?

The story of Kathleen and Bradford Whitaker's Echo Park home remodel is a sweet one - over the past three years, they have been lovingly restoring a turn-of-the-century home back into the single-family dwelling it once was. Converted into three apartments in the 1960s, they moved back doorways to their original positions, restored the flooring, and, as the article so aptly puts it, "renewed its Southern California spirit."

The changing climate of Downtown Echo Park
2014 is a new year and a lot of changes along Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. The most notable changes over the past couple of months - popular restaurants and retail businesses leaving, some of which have been around for decades. Restaurants like Barragan's, which opened in 1961 in that same spot, and, just down the road, 35-year old El Conquistador also just closed.
Some empty retail spots are finally getting some attention - a restaurant of some kind is going in to 1525 Sunset Boulevard near Laveta; it's been a few years since anything has happened there. And, despite the controversy surrounding its owners, Lassen's has started working on the former Save-a-Lot next to Walgreens on the corner of Sunset and Logan, which has been collecting dust for a couple of years now.
For those who welcome those changes, empty storefronts are never good for a neighborhood. But some neighbors aren't thrilled with the changes. Having been in Echo Park for over 30 years now, I can understand the sentimental connection for the history of the neighborhood - after all, it's home!
These are cyclical changes - sometimes painful, sometimes great. I remember going to El Studio 1 back in the day; when it closed down in the 1990s, the place just sat there for nearly 20 years. Before we knew it, it became a bustling craft beer restaurant by the name of Mohawk Bend. It's changed, but I'm glad it's no longer rotting away.
The foundation of the communities in and around Echo Park have and are still shifting; whether it be in real estate, in new restaurants, in the quality of life for our neighbors and our families. Despite the loss of many good things through these changes, as inventor Charles Kettering said, "You can't have a better tomorrow if you are thinking about yesterday all the time."
Eagle Rock named top neighborhood for 2014
In Redfin's "Hottest Neighborhoods of 2014," Northeast Los Angeles' own neighborhood of Eagle Rock takes the number two spot, behind Bernal Heights North Slope in San Francisco.
The website ranked these neighborhoods based on website data (including page visits), realtor input, and - more importantly - access and affordability. Not only do trending neighborhoods have lower median home prices, they offer easy commutes wither by car or public transit.
Eagle Rock's median price range in 2013, according to Redfin, was $539,000 - and saw a 128% jump in page views last year. It's a charming neighborhood with a variety of home styles, clean streets, and great shops and restaurants especially along Eagle Rock and Colorado Boulevard. Our favorite Mexican food restaurant to take new Eagle Rock resident's to is CaCao Mexicatessen - it's a must!
The urban hillsides neighborhood is bordered by the cities of Glendale and Pasadena, adding a suburban atmosphere and then Highland Park and Glassell Park that maintain an edgy, city vibe. Occidental College, the Ivy League of the west, is at the southern edge of Eagle Rock, adding a unexpected collegian energy to the area.
