Retrofitting your home for earthquakes can be an extensive - and expensive - process. It's estimated it can cost around $2,000 up to $10,000. If your home was built before 1979, your foundation may be compromised in an earthquake. Some of the other elements for meeting state building code requirements include:
- Your home is built on a level or low slope site (common in Northeast Los Angeles)
- Is constructed with a four-foot (or less) cripple wall under the first floor
- Has a raised foundation.
With these in mind, you can apply to receive up to $3,000 to help strengthen your foundation through the Earthquake Brace + Bolt fund. The Los Angeles ZIP codes qualified to apply include 90026, 90031, 90039, 90041, 90042 and 90065.
The deadline is Sunday, February 15 to apply for the program - click here for more information and how to register.
