How crowded is your neighborhood?

Things feeling a little more… crowded lately? New U.S. Census data released last week show the Los Angeles County population surpassed 10 million residents in 2013. Both Los Angeles and Orange Counties have some of the high concentration of "crowded homes," as displayed by a Los Angeles Times map of the most crowded zip codes.

How does Northeast Los Angeles fair? Not too bad. The 90026 area code, which includes neighborhoods like Echo Park and Silver Lake, comes in at 15.8% crowded. For comparison, nearby Westlake (zip code 90057) has a 39.9% crowding rate. The 90065 zip code, including neighborhoods like Mount Washington and Glassell Park, are 14.5% crowded. Highland Park and other 90042 neighborhoods are looking at a 16% crowding.

New app guides you through Northeast Los Angeles history

LASHP-Trails2

LASHP-Trails2

A new app releasing in April will guide you through historical points of interest as you walk through Northeast Los Angeles.

LASHP Trails is meant to encourage pedestrian and biking activities by taking an interactive narrative approach. As you walk along a hiking path, you'll get information about a site's history as well as other "themes" like transportation, nature, and urban development - including future developments. The app is being released by Interpretive Media Laboratory (IMLab), a partnership between UCLA and California State Parks.

The first wave of trails in the app will include quite a few around Elysian Park as well as a couple of Downtown routes. More advanced versions of the app will be released over time, with plans to include fitness tracking, social media links, and more.

We're looking forward to exploring Elysian Park and Echo Park with the app next month!

Kids getting creative at the Echo Park Farmers' Market

EchoParkFarmersMarketCrafts

EchoParkFarmersMarketCrafts

Last Friday we had the unique opportunity of volunteering at the kids' craft table in the Echo Park Farmers' Market. Our team provided the materials for the kids to decorate small reusable bags to take home - from glitter to foam stickers, the kids got creative decorating these bags! A few of them even stocked up on fresh fruit while they were at the market.

On top of that, families put their names in our raffle to win a $25 gift certificate to Masa of Echo Park. We'll announce the winner on April 18 during the market's annual Easter Egg Hunt around the market.
