Hamilton House becomes “Green” center of the community
The Hamilton house, an Echo Park Victorian, was built in 1898 and located at 1423 West Court Street. This two-story 2,400 square foot Victorian includes a large formal dining room, sunny living room, open kitchen, traditional porch, office and reading room. There are three bedrooms, a vanity bath, a half bath and square footage includes a 950 square foot creative attic space. It sits on a 6,020 square foot county certified farm with twenty trees (fifteen of them fruit-bearing). There are five raised bed vegetable gardens, a nursery patio, compost stations and numerous outdoor destinations including Loma Tlacuache (Possum Hill), Orchard Lane and Calle Chiminea. An organic restoration – reclaimed lumber, concrete and fixtures were all incorporated in construction.
Green features include gray water plumbing, rain harvesting tanks, solar-powered ventilation, tankless water heater and drought-tolerant landscaping. The front porch looks out onto the Echo Park Indoor Swimming Pool and L.A. skyline beyond. Across the street is the Echo Park Community Center and next to it “Patton Street Park” is slated to open in late 2014. Renovated Echo Lake sits two blocks to the north; Vista Hermosa Nature Park, two blocks to the south.
“It’s a great neighborhood,” says Southern California Institute of Architecture graduate and Ancient L.A. author, Michael Jacob Rochlin. “Friendly, safe and vital. The perfect place to build community.”
